Prom 2012 Fashion Trends

Is it Cinderella’s ball anymore? It’s interesting to see prom trends reflect both the season’s latest fashion trends and celebrity inspired looks. Some – asymmetrical dresses and embellishments – continue on from 2011 – while others are more fashion forward designs. I spoke to a few fashion experts to spot the Spring 2012 top Prom Trends.

Bling

Yes, you will sparkle on the Prom night, but adding some bling will help. Many designers are carrying head to toe sequined or beaded gowns. “Glitter adds a touch of glamour so bling is definitely in this year,” says Jeanne Hennessey, Boston fashion expert and owner of Lorraine Roy Designer Collections. “In fact many dresses are coming in that are fully sequined or beaded and they are really spectacular. You can find them in all colors from jewel tones to pastels. Even if head-to-toe sparkle is not your thing, many styles have one bold accent like a rhinestone shoulder strap or beaded waistline that give the gown that wow factor. Prom goers are loving this trend!”

Neon & Vibrant Colors

The bright pop colors of spring are jiving with the prom fashions. ” Most girls want to stand out in a sea of ordinary and un-inventive prom dresses”, says Joanne Stoner, a 25 year fashion veteran and founder of eDressMe.com. “Wearing a boldly colored prom dress has never been more on trend, especially if you select bright neon shades. From neon orange to brilliant turquoise and jewel tones, a vibrant prom dress will make a statement this prom season.”

High Low Trend

This is one of the more flattering silhouettes. It offers the best of both worlds – short in the front, long in the back, says Jeanne Hennessey of Lorraine Roy Designer Collections. “The high low trend gives a formal impression but with a more contemporary twist. There are many types of high-low gowns; some are one-piece, some have a detachable skirt, and some skirts have a different fabric or print than the dress itself. This particular gown design allows girls to express their unique style and have some fun with fashion. It has been all over the runways and red carpet this season and prom styles are definitely reflecting that.”

Eye-Catching Prints

This is yet another runway influence. “One of the freshest trends for prom 2012 is the introduction of vivid audacious prints”, says Joanne Stoner of eDressMe.com. “Modest and conservative looks are just too passé! Whether you choose floral, graphic, tie-dye patterns or somewhere in between, you are sure to be the star of the evening!”

Mermaid

This sleek and sexy style is very popular for prom 2012 because it is so flattering and so feminine. “This season it’s all about flaunting that feminine hourglass frame! This flared trumpet style gown is sure to flaunt your assets in all the right places come prom. Tall or petite, be sure to consider this avant-garde mermaid look that is bound to flatter your figure.”, says Joanne Stoner of eDressMe.com.

Longer Sleeve

Quite a few celebrities spotted longer sleeves at the Oscars this year. So no surprise, cap, 3/4 or even long sleeves are a popular design element in prom fashion in 2012. “Gowns with sleeves – from cap sleeves to full length – have been popular since celebrities like Octavia Spencer and Madonna at the Golden Globes to Katy Perry at the Grammy Awards have been donning gorgeous styles with sleeves”, says Jeanne Hennessey. “We are seeing that trend in our store as well, which may have originated with Pippa Middletons’ gown at Kate and William’s Royal Wedding which caused quite a stir! Regardless, many prom-goers are opting for dresses that may show a little less skin but are still very glamorous and sleek.”

Asymetrical Shoulders

This trend continues from 2011 – it’s a feminine and flattering style. “For those who are looking for something less cliché but equally sensual this prom, a one shoulder prom dress might just be what you need! The one-shoulder look is both elegant and sophisticated.”, says Joanne Stoner of eDressMe.com.

Hollywood Glamour

Prom night is very much like a red carpet event. It’s about glamour and inner beauty. And what can express it better than a Hollywood style gown? Here’s what Joanne Stoner has to say on this trend: “Designers make this possible by recreating similar versions of red carpet winners.  You can shine like Kate Winslet or look sultry like Angelina Jolie on your special night.  Make your prom a star-studded event with glamorous hair, makeup and accessories. Get ready for that close up!”
