Fall 2012 Shoe and Accessory Trends: the Drama Continues

Fall accessories are a dazzling accompaniment to the dramatic clothing of the season. Embellishments, metallics, animal prints will all go well with the darker tones of Fall 2012. Accessories designers embraced vivid colors and a mix of fabrics, that will now be synonymous with this season. Here are a few of my favorite accessory trends for Fall 2012.

Metallics

This trend is running high in the Fall 2012 accessories. Earrings, bracelets (especially cuffs), bags and clutches, shoes and watches – all are in silver or with a metallic motif. Perhaps, it’s a reflection of the popular chrome or steel trends in and on other products.

Southwestern Influences

“This upcoming season, the look is all about Southwestern influences. Our new pieces reflect that trend with chunky silver, leather touches, natural stones and oversized turquoise,” says owner and founder of AccessoryArtists.com Marcy Roth. “Each piece can be paired with basic denim and a white tee for daytime, or will instantly dress up a LBD with hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail.”

Animal Prints

I have to admit, I am lumping in a lot of wildlife here – from traditional animal prints (leopard, tiger) to alligator and snakeskin. Fall 2012 is a wild season!
Snakeskin is a popular choice for belts, shoes and bags. I love the Brian Atwood snake-print platform pumps I saw at Nordstrom. Snake prints are popular on boots, in particular. Alligator is a huge trend in bags, with great examples from Fendi clutches and Nina Ricci purses, but I also loved the alligator boots from Laboutin. Louis Vuitton is no stranger to animal prints, and this season is no exception, but I will point out that there were quite a few on duffel bags.

The Clutch

This little bag requires a special occasion, but this season it’s the go to bag for the night. Clutch is king for Fall 2012, so many designers, including Dries Van Noten, Roger Vivier and Lanvin brought their unique clutch this season.

Cross-body Bag

The cross-body is a practical kind of bag. Coach and Chanel both featured cross-body bags for Fall. If you look around you’ll already see many women wearing a cross-body bag.

Brooch

Both of my grandmothers had a lot of these and always eager to pass them to me, and this is the year when these unique, often time-lost pieces are super hip. Whether you wear one or a few, they are a great accessory this fall. Pamela Pekerman, TV correspondent and Accessory & Style Expert (www.PamelaPekerman.com) is excited that tailored lady-like fashion is in style: “Ladies are looking regal and elegant, as they should. Bundles of broaches on sweaters, jacket lapels, or at the waist of a dress are Hollywood-glamour at its finest and one of my favorite accessorizing dos for fall. They take an outfit from ordinary to extraordinary.” Pamela suggests bundling 3 or 4 broaches on the lapel of you jacket, at the collar of you sweater even on the waist of your dress. “It’s an effective way to infuse glamour into what you already have in your closet”, she says.

Gold Jewelry & Watches

Peggy Li, a jewelry designer whose work has been seen on TV’s Private Practice, in the pages of Lucky Magazine and more, says “I’m loving the luxe look of black and gold and the return of brocade. After feeling the pinch of the economy recently, a return to luxury feels indulgent and fun! Jewelry trends are also responding with mixes of black and gold, bigger statement collar/bib necklaces.” There is a beautiful example from Aurelie Bidermann – one of the best representations of bib necklace I’ve seen.

Floral Earrings

While this is more often a personal preference, florals tend to be a favorite this fall. Chandelier and long swirl earrings look best in floral designs. Of course, this means color and more color and the vibrant indigo is the perfect color for fall. Some of my favorite examples come from Oscar De La Renta.

Tall Boot

If you haven’t yet gotten a pair of riding boots or knee-high boots, there is still time! They were so loved that they are back for yet another season. The heel is getting wider though, with platform heel a popular option. Riding boot is one of my favorites, especially the kind with a flat heel that makes it easy to chase after my kids.

Unique Bootie

The high heel, the wedge, or alligator skin – a few of the wild variety of examples you can see the fall bootie. Fendi even offered color-blocked booties. This season you will also see a lot of prints, like Proenza Schouler checkered bootie. Michael Kors is my favorite for this style this season, with the most unique yet wearable bootie.

Heels with Prints and Embellishments

If I was a time traveler and were looking for a great pump, this is the perfect season to find it. These heels come embellished (Valentino), full of prints (Tabitha Simmons, Nicholas Kirkwood) and adorned with various configurations.
