ready for 1st gradeEntering the 1st grade is a big deal for any child. If your child is entering the first grade soon, he will have to adjust to a longer school day and more schoolwork. He will also have to learn how to get round by himself and be more independent. As a parent, there are a few things you can do to prepare your child for the first grade.

Wean Him From Naps

When your child enters the first grade, he will no longer get to take naps in the middle of the day like he did [if he did] in kindergarten. This adjustment can be difficult for some children. To make the transition easier, you should start weaning him from naps in the beginning of the summer.

Practice Academic Activities With Him

First grade schoolwork will be more challenging, so you should definitely practice academic activities with him in the summer. For example, you can help him build up his reading skills by reading short stories with him. You can also teach your child how to use a microscope. Visit www.microscope.com/compound-microscopes and buy him a microscope.

Talk to Your Child Beforehand

It is important to talk to your child about the changes he will experience in first grade. Let him know that the days will be longer and that there will be tests and more homework. If he knows what to expect, he will not be so shocked the first day. Also, let your child know you will always be there when he needs help with his schoolwork.

Visit the School

Even if he is a returning student, you should take him to visit the school in the summer. Take him to see his classroom, cafeteria, gym and library. Also, see if his teacher is willing to meet him beforehand. If you show your child around the school beforehand, he will feel less nervous on his first day.

Take Him School Supply Shopping

A couple of weeks before school starts, take your child school supply shopping. Let him pick out his backpack and other important supplies like markers, folders and scissors. For example, if he wants a folder with Batman on it, let him get it. Letting him pick out some of his school supplies will help him get more excited for school.

Making the transition to first grade might not be easy, but your child will be just fine. If you follow these great tips, he will enjoy the first grade.
